Living with Polar Bears
Living With Polar Bears offers awe-inspiring stories from Arctic photographers, park rangers and residents. These tales culminate to paint a vivid portrait of how Man and the ice bear are learning to survive and thrive harmoniously in a changing environment. Some encounters are inspirational. Others are outright frightening. Sonny Voyce knows the power of polar bears. A giant bear tracked him down and clamped its jaw around his head. John Bykerk almost met the same fate. A hungry bear became trapped in the back of his garbage truck. They’re just some of the frightening encounters featured in Living With Polar Bears.
Killer Whale and Crocodile
Carvers from two of the world’s great carving traditions come together. A First Nations carver from Canada travels into the jungles of Papua New Guinea and a New Guinea carver travels to urban Canada. Together, they share each other’s cultures and learn about the myths and legends that inform their individual artistic styles. In the Spring of 2006 John Marston, a young Coast Salish carver from Vancouver Island who has already gained a strong reputation for his innovative approach to traditional Coast Salish styles, visited Teddy Balangu, a carver from the Sepik River of Papua New Guinea. Teddy returned to Canada where he was the artist in residence at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia for 5 months.

The ultimate thrill comes at the programme’s conclusion as the gibbons are released – in a new experimental trial – into the wild.

Gods in Shackles
Gods in Shackles is an impassioned call to alleviate the suffering of the gentle giants whose cry for help is falling on deaf ears. This epic documentary reveals the dark side of the southern Indian state of Kerala’s glamorous cultural festivals where temple elephants are exploited on a daily basis for profit under the guise of culture and religion. By exposing the abhorrent torture suffered by India’s heritage animal, Gods in Shackles offers hope to the thousands of endangered captive and wild Asian elephants in India through heightened awareness.
The film offers balanced perspectives of key stakeholders that will inspire policy makers to create changes that would foster better living conditions for these highly social and intelligent animals.
Fish Listeners of the Setiu Lagoons
Follow Pak Harun, the last Malay “fish listener”, in a story that reveals secrets of a time past, and may teach us a thing or two about living with nature for the future. The fish listeners are unique to Malay fishing culture. Traditionally, the fish listener’s task is to listen for fish and track them. The nets will not be dropped unless the fish listener gives the green light. Highly skilled fish listeners are able to locate where, how much and what kinds of fish are in the water, what depths the fish are at, and an approximation of how big a catch can be netted. While there are a handful of fish listeners alive today, only Pak Harun still sustains a living in this manner. He is currently teaching his son Polo, the art of fish listening. The film explores his art and his knowledge of the fish he hunts and the sea where he works.
